Saudi-Sino Relations: President Hu in Riyadh

Click here to read about the visit of President Hu to Riyadh. (SUSRIS / NID / Apr. 24, 2006) "..If the January visit of King Abdullah to Beijing opened a new era in Sino-Saudi relations, as Chinese leader Hu Jintao claimed at the time, then the April 22-24 visit of President Hu to Riyadh appears to have solidified the relationship. The burgeoning ties between Riyadh and Beijing have been characterized as the result of Saudi Arabia's recognition of Asia's rising economic and geo-strategic status and China's increasing appetite for energy and the importance it attaches to securing future supplies of hydrocarbon resources. The talks between the leaders and delegations centered on trade, especially in the area of oil, natural gas and minerals. China's commerce minister, according to AFP, said the volume of trade between the countries was $2.7 billion in the first two months of 2006, up 43 percent from the same period in 2005..."

The Time is Now: Rachel Bronson Interview

Click here to read the SUSRIS interview with Dr. Rachel Bronson. (SUSRIS / Interview / Apr. 26, 2006)"..Jeddah in particular and Saudi Arabia in general are in a race against time and the time that they are racing against is King Abdullah's biological clock. This was starkly obvious in a number of ways at the Forum. For instance, a lot of proposals had overly ambitious deadlines of being completed by 2010. That's because many realize that there is an opportunity for creativity and momentum that may not be there ten years from now. The best example of this is King Abdullah Economic City. I don’t believe ground is yet broken on the project but the plans are for people to begin moving in in 24-36 months. This is a massive $30 billion dollar project to create a -- a Dubai on the Red Sea -- if you will. King Abdullah has given investors and developers the go ahead for this as one way to motivate further economic growth, address Saudi Arabia’s deep education problems, spur employment, and so forth. It’s ambitious. It’s questionable whether it will work. And it’s expected to all happen within just a few years. For most developers the notion that you can do this in a few years is somewhat absurd but I think in Saudi Arabia at the moment everything is on a very quick timetable. The question, for many, is who knows if King Abdullah’s successor will be as interested in supporting such a project..."

GlobeInvest Banking Forum

Click here to read a report on investment banking in Saudi Arabia. (SUSRIS / IOI / Apr. 29, 2006)"..There is a perception all over the world that with high oil prices, the Gulf region has solid liquidity with huge surpluses of funds to finance its current and future projects, [Dr. Nahed M. Taher, CEO, GulfOne Investment Bank] said, adding, “This implies that they have no problems in conquering their future structural bottlenecks and finance.” “This is incorrect,” said Nahed, a strong proponent of the Kingdom’s economic liberalization and reform in the interest of its burgeoning population and sustainable economic development. “It’s incorrect because of the lack of proper investment banking activities and long-term debt tools that misutilize much of the incoming funds and hinder the development, depth and expansion of the private sector’s role in the economy, which is essential for bringing efficiency and acceleration to our economic growth,” she said.."

UN Report to Focus on the Development of Women in the Arab World

Click for complete item (HTML)The Arab Human Development report, expected to be published in June, will focus on the position of women across the Arab world and will examine the different issues related to the development of women in Arab societies, according to Dr. Mohammed Kamel Aref, science and technology advisor at the United Nations Development Program.  In Saudi Arabia on a fact-finding mission, Aref told Asharq al Awsat on Wednesday that he had witnessed firsthand the activities of women researchers and scientists in Saudi Arabia and was surprised how much they had achieved in scientific areas in a short space of time.. ..Because of a lack of information and statistics about women scientists in Saudi Arabia, Aref decided to visit the Kingdom himself.. ..“Based on the results and the information we have gathered so far, I can say that the report will reflect the strength of the Saudi woman and single out the areas were they stand out.. ..I dare say that the picture it will present will totally contradict the world’s perception of Saudi women. People hold simple and wrong information in most cases about the position of women in Saudi.”  [Asharq Alawsat]

Iraqi Strife Seeping Into Saudi Kingdom

Click for complete item (HTML)Click here for more."..At first, the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq gave optimism to Shiites here along Saudi Arabia's eastern coast. Unlike infuriated Sunnis, many Shiites felt a surge of quiet hope when the U.S. arrived in Iraq three years ago. Emboldened by their Iraqi brethren's escape from the oppressive rule of Saddam Hussein, Shiites here and in other Sunni-ruled nations began to demand — and win — freedoms of their own.  Bit by bit, old rules have fallen away in recent years: Saudi Shiites won the right to publish and read sectarian literature. They can now work as journalists, build mosques and open Shiite schools to educate their sons.. ..Sunni-Shiite understanding has been deepened in recent years by the "national dialogue" -- the royal family's project of arranging face-to-face conferences of Saudis of different backgrounds. The talks have drawn Shiite and Sunni clerics from around the country to discuss its future.." [LA Times]

Click here for Gulf 2000 web site. The Gulf 2000/Project Web Site

Click for complete item (HTML)This site was developed by the Gulf/2000 Project at the School of International and Public Affairs of Columbia University in New York City. It is designed to make available in a single location a wealth of information on the eight countries of the Persian Gulf region--Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

The Persian Gulf sits on top of the greatest pool of oil reserves in the world. Over the past few decades, it has been the site of two major wars, an Islamic revolution, and political and economic developments that have affected every country in the world. It is also the home of more than 118 million people, whose cultures extend back to the origins of recorded history.

Nevertheless, for most non-specialists the Gulf remains a mysterious and even forbidding part of the world. This site hopes to remove some of the mystery. With a few clicks of your mouse, you can visit any of these countries, read their local newspapers, check the latest news from the region, and find information about every aspect of their history, geography, politics, economics, military forces and much more.

We have identified what we believe are the most informative and reliable sources of information about the Persian Gulf. We cannot guarantee the accuracy of every item of information that you may find in the many sources collected here, but we have made it as easy as possible to cross-check facts between data collections located throughout the world.  [Gulf 2000 Web Site]
