Yanbu
[also spelled Yenbo] is
located in western Saudi
Arabia on the Red Sea north
of Jidda. Yanbu Commercial
Port is located on the East
coast of Red Sea
approximately 460 nautical
miles South of Suez Canal
and 168 nautical miles

a natural harbor sheltered
by the mainland to the North
and East and by coral reefs
to the South and South-East..
..Yanbu Industrial City
occupies a linear coastal
site that straddles the
highway connecting Jeddah
with communities to the
northwest. The development
area is approximately 24
Kilometers long and 7
Kilometers wide,
encompassing approximately
185 square Kilometers in
total. The Industrial City
of Yanbu functions not only
as a prominent port on the

Jubail and Yanbu
constitute a unique
experiment in development
which has proved
outstandingly successful.
These are two cities which
were conceived on the
drawing board and were
planned to provide a
purpose-built and highly
efficient environment for
modern industrial
production. These industrial
complexes, built at
Jubail on the Arabian Gulf
and Yanbu on the Red Sea by
the Royal Commission for
Jubail and Yanbu, are the
key to the Kingdom's
national industrialization
plans. These two industrial
cities provide the basis for
the Kingdom's program to
develop hydrocarbon-based
and energy intensive
industries. The massive
investment in these
industrial cities has as its
major objective a reduction
in the Kingdom's dependence
on oil
revenues by gaining access
to the world's petrochemical
markets. This route to
industrialization exploits
the Kingdom's natural
advantages, in terms of
cheap energy and cheap raw
materials for petrochemical
manufacture.
Jubail & Yanbu: The
East-West Pipeline
http://www.saudinf.com/main/a862.htm
As
part of the
Kingdom's
determination to
optimize its energy
resources, the Royal
Commission for
Jubail & Yanbu
implemented a two
stage project to
conserve and then
exploit the
Kingdom's enormous
reserves of natural
gas in the eastern
region.
First, the Royal
Commission established a
vast network to gather and
process natural gas in the
industrial city of Jubail.
Then it proceeded with the
construction of a double
pipeline, running from east
to west across the Kingdom
to transport
oil
and gas from Jubail to Yanbu
in order to supply energy
for the many industrial
projects which Yanbu
undertook and to facilitate
the export of these energy
products from the Red Sea
coast. The pipeline which
runs for 730 miles (1,170
km) was completed in 1982.
