After going 0-3 in their pool of the Little League
World Championship series of baseball last year the Arabian American Little League team from Dhahran, Saudi Arabia are back in a big way.
You would think that Andrew Holden, the five-foot-8, 226-pound, power-hitting third baseman, and Michael Knight, the 6-foot-3, 190 pound pitcher and outfielder were big for Little Leaguers. And you would be right. But then you'd have to consider their teammate, first baseman Andrew Durley. He sports size 19 shoes, which is about right to transport a 6-foot-8, 256 pound frame.
Durley is 13 years old.
But the Arabian American team has more going for it than oversized players. The team, whose players' parents are mostly in Gulf area oil industries, has been
represented at Williamsport, Pennsylvania every year in the last seven championship series and 12 of the last 13 years. And this year, following up on their 5-0 record at the Trans-Atlantic Regional Tournament in Poland, they are off to a 2-0 start in their pool at Williamsport. Arabian American is likely to advance from their four-team pool to the International Semifinal Round on Wednesday unless Venezuela can win two games on Monday and defeat Arabian American in a Tuesday showdown game.
We wish Arabian American and every team competing for the Little League World Championship all the best.
