Hundreds Killed in Crushing Stampede

Tragedy visited pilgrims participating at the annual Hajj in Saudi Arabia on Thursday as at least 345 people were killed and more than a thousand injured when a stampede occurred during a rite at Jamarat bridge.  The accident, which took place at the site of the symbolic stoning of pillars representing the devil, occurred after some pilgrims tripped over luggage that had spilled from buses.

"MINA, Saudi Arabia -- Thousands of Muslim pilgrims rushing to complete a symbolic stoning ritual during the hajj tripped over luggage Thursday, causing a crush in which at least 345 people were killed despite Saudi attempts to prevent stampedes that have plagued the annual event.  The stampede occurred as tens of thousands of pilgrims headed toward al-Jamarat, a series of three pillars representing the devil that the faithful pelt with stones to purge themselves of sin.  Interior Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Mansour al-Turki said 345 people were killed. More than 1,000 people were injured, said Dr. Abbasi with the Saudi Red Crescent.."

"..The ritual has seen many lethal stampedes but the number of dead this time is the highest in 16 years.  After a crush in 2004, barriers and stewards were added to improve safety.  The stampede took place at the foot of the bridge of Jamarat, where pilgrims hurl stones at three pillars representing the spot where the devil is said to have appeared to Abraham.."
