Attack in Khobar

Gunmen
attacked compounds housing oil workers in Khobar,
Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia at about 7:30 a.m.
(0430 GMT). Hostages were being held at one
compound. Saudi officials said 16 people
have been killed in the attacks. Al Qaeda
has claimed responsibility.
Developments
- Four gunmen
attacked three compounds housing the offices
of oil companies, before taking hostages at
the luxury Oasis
residential compound. (Source:

- Guards at the
oil industry compounds, which hold offices as
well as employee apartments, said four gunmen
in military-style dress opened fire, and then
engaged in a shootout with Saudi security
forces before holing up inside the Oasis
residential compound down the street and
taking hostages. (NY

- The gunmen
barged into the homes of the Lebanese at Oasis
compound and took them hostage. Five
Lebanese were released from the residence.

- The U.S.
Embassy said one American was confirmed dead.
The British Foreign Office in London was
investigating reports that a British citizen
also was killed. Philippines officials in
Manila said they were checking unconfirmed
reports that three Filipinos were among the

- A 10 year-old
Egyptian child was among those killed at the
Apicorp compound where his father worked..

guards were believed to be dead. (Source:

- At least one of
the oil industry compounds was believed to be
occupied by Apicorp, the Arab Petroleum
Investment Corporation and investment arm of
Organization of Petroleum Exporting Companies.

- While the
attacks were under way, a statement posted on
an Islamic Web site apparently referred to
them under the title, "A gift to al-Moqrin
and his heroic brothers" -- a reference
to AbdulAziz al-Moqrin, believed to lead
al-Qaida operations on the Arabian Peninsula.

- At least 10
ambulances were seen outside the Oasis
compound, an upscale residential complex owned
by a Saudi businessman, where the militants
took refuge and hostages. Hundreds of
policemen surrounded the compound, and
helicopters hovered overhead. (Source:

third attack against foreigners in Saudi
Arabia in less than a month. (Source:

- The Oasis
Abdulaziz, Soha, Hanin and Mishal, are
luxurious residential resorts located minutes
from the business districts of Dhahran and
