Saudi Delivers UCLA Commencement Address  

Click here to read about a Saudi Arabian student at UCLA who's achievement has led to her being chosen to delivery the commencement address.  (SUSRIS / IOI / June 15, 2006)"..A hard-charging political science major from Saudi Arabia has been selected to deliver the student address at the June 16 commencement exercises for UCLA's College of Letters and Science.  Manal Quota, an honor student with a distinguished record of political involvement and community service, will share the dais with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who is scheduled to keynote the ceremony.."

"..Via the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Tyler County received two 150-kilowatt generators late Thursday night..  ..But Saudi Arabia?  Seems unusual to some, but the country assisted the Hurricane Katrina-ravaged shrimping industry in Bayou La Batre, Ala., and also donated to Deep East Texas Council of Governments to help rebuild 300 blue-roofed homes to date. According to an Associated Press article, millions of Saudi Arabian dollars have been donated to hurricane victims.."

US Sends Remains of Three Guantanamo Suicides to Saudi Arabia, Yemen [Jun 17]
"The Pentagon says the remains of three men who committed suicide at the U-S prison at Guantanamo Bay have been sent to their homeland. A spokesman says a commercial charter jet transported the remains from the Navy base in southeastern Cuba to Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Officials say the men hanged themselves June tenth inside their steel mesh cells at the detention center. They were the first reported detainee deaths at the prison since it opened in January 2002.." UAE Dominates Foreign Investment in Saudi Arabia [Jun 17]
"The UAE has overtaken Japan to become the dominant foreign investor in Saudi Arabia following the signing of a mega deal between Emaar and the Kingdom last year.. ..The UAE investment approved by the Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority (SAGIA) stood at a staggering 122.9 billion by the end of May, accounting for nearly 41 per cent of the total FDI pumped into the Kingdom.." Saudi Stock Market Turnover Falls to SR138.64BN [Jun 17]
"The Saudi stock exchange continued its volatile performance last week amid a persistent wave of speculation. The Tadawul All-Share Index (TASI) gained 161.87 points or 1.35 percent, closing at 12,046.10 points on Wednesday, up from 11,994.10 points in the previous week after the five-day trading was introduced from Thursday. The Capital Market Authority (CMA) announced earlier that starting June 15 the trading week would be reduced from six to five days, or Saturday to Wednesday. TASI is currently 27.9 percent lower than the year's start.." [more]

We Bribed Saudis, Says Ex-minister [Jun 17]
"Britain bribed senior Saudi officials to secure arms contracts, a former Tory defence secretary admitted last night. Lord Gilmour who, as Sir Ian Gilmour, held the post in Edward Heath's government, said payments were necessary to beat American and French competition.. ..The arms industry, primarily BAE, has earned billions from the desert kingdom since the 1960s. But it is now being investigated by the Serious Fraud Office over an alleged slush fund used to bribe Saudi officials.." [more]

Saudi Arabia Gives Tyler County the Power [Jun 17]
"Via the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Tyler County received two 150-kilowatt generators late Thursday night. Feeley filled out the proposal, which resulted in the $100,000 donation to the rural county that couldn't otherwise redirect funding for lavish disaster-relief tools.. ..The guidelines read stereotypically, Feeley said. Apply for grant to supply food, water or clothes. In Feeley's opinion, the local churches and non-profit aid had covered the immediate needs, and what Feeley wanted was a gift that kept on giving.." State Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia to Pay Visit to Azerbaijan [Jun 16]
"Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will be represented at the upcoming meeting of foreign ministers of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) at the level of state foreign minister Nizara O. Madani.. ..The state foreign minister will be accompanied by the delegation of the Forign ministry of this country. Within the participation at the meeting, the state minister is going to hold several bilateral meetings with officials of Azerbaijan.." [more]

Saudi Arabia Boycotts Award Sponsored by Beer Company [Jun 16]
"Saudi Arabian players will boycott FIFA's man of the match award during the World Cup because it is sponsored by Anheuser-Busch, an American company that manufactures Budweiser beer. 'It's a matter of principle. No special meeting or decision needed to be taken. Saudi players will not accept an award linked to the maker of an alcoholic beverage,' said Abdullah al-Dabal, a Saudi soccer federation official.." [more]

Oil States and Their Responsibility to Poor Countries [Jun 16]
"The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) has suffered from two basic problems. The first involves the attempt to differentiate between the Fund and its famous neighbor in Vienna, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, which dominates the news when there is a rise or fall in oil prices. The second is the public notion that whenever a natural disaster takes place, such as the Asian tsunami, oil states have a limited role in providing assistance, which is the case with industrial countries.." Chinese Find Investment, Trade Prospects Bright [Jun 16]
"A delegation of Chinese businessmen said here yesterday that their current visit has helped them to study the prospects for investment, and the expansion of joint ventures and trade. Some of the 300 members of 149 Shanghai companies, whose four-day China Products Fair ended at the Jeddah International Exhibition and Convention Center last night, said their one-to-one meetings with local businessmen at the JCCI and also at the fair were fruitful.." SR600 Million Saudi Investment in Germany [Jun 16]
"Partners for Development, Investment and Tourism Company signed a contract with German L.E.G. for real estate development for establishing “Innovation Village”, a tourism, commercial and residential project in Asen, Germany, for SR600 million.. ..The project’s capital is 100 percent Saudi and is considered the first tourism, commercial and residential project by the private sector in Asen.." Saudis Hand Over Manager of Sunken Ferry to Egypt [Jun 16]
"Saudi authorities handed over to Egypt on Friday the manager of the company that owns the Egyptian ferry, which sank in February, killing about 1,000 people.. ..Orabi, who arrived under heavy security aboard a Saudi Airlines flight early Friday, was immediately taken in for questioning, the source said. He had been arrested a few days earlier in Riyadh on an Egypt warrant. His whereabouts had previously been unknown. The Al-Salam Boccaccio 98 sank in the middle of the Red Sea on February 3 as it was carrying more than 1,400 people from Saudi Arabia to the Egyptian port of Safaga.." [more]

Guidelines To Select Schools In The US [Jun 16]
"The US Embassy in Riyadh has issued guidelines to students in selecting proper and accredited institutes of learning. This year many Saudi students are preparing to study in the United States, either on scholarship or using personal funds. Other students will study with institutions in the United States via distance learning or online programs. It is important for all students to be careful in choosing where and with whom they will study.." [more]

Tunisia Held 2-2 by Saudi Arabia at World Cup Group H Match [Jun 15]
"Saudi Arabia held African champions Tunisia to a 2-2 draw in their World Cup Group H match on Wednesday. Zied Jairi gave Tunisia a 1-0 after 23 minutes, firing home a spectacular volley after Redha Tuker made a poor clearance from a free kick. Yasser Al Khatani equalized the score for Saudi Arabia with their first World Cup goal since 1998 in the 57th minute.." [more]

Saudi Cuts Asian Exports [Jun 15]
"Saudi Arabia has cut oil exports to Asia by over 0.5m bpd since March 2006 to match lower demand from refiners, according to Reuters citing tanker tracker Petrologistics. Production dropped to 9.05m bpd in May, its lowest level this year. The kingdom has long-term contracts to export just under 7m bpd of crude worldwide.." [more]

Saudi Arabia Provides Food Aid for 50,000 Palestinian Families [Jun 15]
"Days after the United Nations World Food Programme warned that hundreds of thousands of Palestinians are becoming destitute, Saudi Arabia has responded with a donation of USD2.6 million to purchase food for 50,000 of the worst affected families.. ..The 100-kilogram Saudi food basket will include five commodities: fortified wheat flour, pulses, fortified vegetable oil, sugar and iodized salt.." Saudi Bourse Slightly Up [Jun 15]
"Saudi stocks inched up 0.4% in the volatile week to Wednesday as speculators took advantage of abundant liquidity ahead of second-quarter results season, traders said. A late rally helped the all-share index, Sasi, of the largest Arab bourse close yesterday’s session 0.92% higher at 12,046.10 points after it stayed in the red for much of the day, falling by up to 1.9%.." Case of Dead Guantanamo Inmates Snowballs [Jun 15]
"The Families of Saudi prisoners at the U.S. base in Guanatanamo, Cuba, are planning to play up the case of three inmates who allegedly committed suicide. The lawyer of the families said he will raise the incidents, which sparked anger and skepticism among Saudis at an international meeting in Beirut. Fahed Shumari said Thursday he will ask for an independent probe into the death of the three prisoners, two Saudis and a Yemeni, at the three-day conference of the Council of the International Criminal Union which will convene in the Lebanese capital Friday.." First Charity For AIDS Patients In The Kingdom [Jun 15]
"An official at Makkah Regional Council revealed a plan for the foundation of the first ever charity dedicated to helping AIDS patients in the Kingdom, Asharq Alawsat, the Arabic-language daily reported Wednesday. Saleh Al-Turki, a member of the Social Development Committee entrusted by the council to found the charity, said one of the major objectives of the society is to provide aid to the families of the patients and launch an awareness campaign.." "With oil prices hovering around $70, does this signal a new wave of foreign relations for Saudi Arabia, or it is just a natural aftermath of the 9/11 attacks? Lords Rule That Britons Cannot Sue Saudi Torturers [Jun 14]
"Four British men who claim that they were tortured in Saudi Arabian prisons are to take Britain to the European Court of Human Rights after the law lords ruled they could not sue their alleged torturers.. ..The Saudi Government, backed by the UK Government, had argued that its officials were protected by the 1978 State Immunity Act from proceedings brought in this country.." Saudi Oil Output in May Down at 9.05 mbpd [Jun 14]
"Saudi Arabia's oil production fell to 9.05 million barrels per day (bpd) in May from 9.1 million bpd in April in line with lower customer demand for heavy Saudi crude, a senior Opec delegate said yesterday. 'There is less call for oil from Saudi Arabia and other countries,' the delegate told Reuters. 'Whatever customers want, Saudi Arabia will give them, unless they ask for ultra or super light crude, which is already allocated.." [more]

Saudi Civic Body Listens to Citizen Critique in First Open Meeting [Jun 14]
"Hundreds of men and women, representing some 4.5 million inhabitants of Riyadh, took part in an open meeting with the members of the capital's municipal council here on Tuesday. This was the first ever open meeting of the people in a Saudi city with the elected members of their council. The meeting witnessed a free and frank airing of views by the citizens of Riyadh about the pros and cons of the council's performance.." [more]

Saudi Plans $8bn Economic City in North [Jun 14]
"Saudi Arabia has announced plans to build a northern economic city at a cost of $8 billion. The city, to be built over 10 years, will host agricultural and mineral industries, an education zone and a residential area with 30,000 housing units.. ..The city will cost SR30 billion ($8 billion), an AFP report quoted a source in Rakisa Holding as saying.." Hail University Foundation Today [Jun 14]
"Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah will lay the foundation stone for the Hail University today. During his tour of the region, he will also open new water, educational, health and infrastructure projects worth more than SR2 billion.. ..The Hail University campus covers an area of 20 million square meters and will include colleges of engineering, computer science, medicine, science and community as well as a university hospital.." OPEC Fund Marks 30th Anniversary [Jun 14]
"The OPEC Fund for International Development plays a significant role in promoting the development of poor countries, according to Suleiman Al-Herbish, director general of the fund.. ..'OPEC works to stabilize international oil market and promote development of poor and middle-income countries,' he told the meeting, which was attended by finance ministers of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Algeria, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Nigeria and Venezuela.." Muallami Opens China Trade Fair [Jun 14]
"THE Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) Chairman, Abdullah Bin Yahya Al-Muallami inaugurated here Monday China Products Fair 2006. The show is organized by the Ministry of Commerce of China and Shanghai Municipal Government.. ..'The four-day Fair and Investment Cooperation Conference is one of the biggest solo show of any country in Saudi Arabia,' Chinese Consul General Chang Yi said. Laura Bush Announces Partnership to Fight Breast Cancer in the Middle East [Jun 13]
"First Lady Laura Bush announced a major women’s health campaign in the Middle East in remarks at the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation 2006 Mission Conference in Arlington, Virginia.. ..The partnership is organized by the State Department’s Office of Public Diplomacy and the Middle East Partnership Initiative.." Saudi to Increase Oil Production to 12 Million Barrels a Day by 2009 [Jun 13]
"Saudi Arabia is planning to increase its production of crude oil to 12 million barrels per day by the end of 2009, the Saudi News Agency reported on Tuesday. The president of oil company Aramco Abdallah Jomaa was quoted by the agency as saying that the increase is expected to compensate for the downturn in oil production and reach the company’s maximum production capacity through the implementation of a number of huge projects.." Franchise System Growing Fast in Saudi Market [Jun 13]
"The franchise system is relatively new but growing in the Saudi market, according to experts who spoke at the seminar on the sidelines of the Jeddah Franchising Exhibition.. ..However, he also pointed out that in Saudi Arabia there is no system regulating franchise agreements yet at the Ministry of Commerce. There is a project underway of developing a system for franchises. Speaking to Arab News, Talal Badkook, chairman and CEO of Badkook Group and the Franchise Development Services Company, said that the franchise system entered the Kingdom in the early 90's so it is relatively new.." New Defence Attache Position in Saudi Arabia [Jun 13]
"New Defence Attaché position in Saudi Arabia. Defence Minister Phil Goff announced today the establishment of a new Defence Attaché position in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The role of a Defence Attaché is to provide liaison between New Zealand defence interests and those of the nation in which they reside. Brigadier Neville Reilly will take up the position in July. Brigadier Reilly is a highly experienced and distinguished member of the New Zealand Defence Force and former Defence Attaché in Jakarta.." [more]

Rights Watchdog Worried by Gitmo Deaths [Jun 13]
"The Saudi National Organization for Human Rights has called for an emergency meeting of countries with prisoners in Guantanamo to discuss their plight. The organization's president, Bandar Hajjar, said in a statement Tuesday that the members of his rights watchdog held an extraordinary meeting following the deaths of two Saudi prisoners held at the U.S. prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and agreed to call for an international meeting to debate the issue.." Saud Satisfied With Iran Talks [Jun 13]
"Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal said yesterday he hoped for a speedy resolution of the crisis over Iran’s nuclear program. 'We hope this crisis is solved as soon as possible,'.. ..Saud said he was satisfied with what Mottaki had told him about the nuclear file. “He told me that Iran has a positive view and is examining the content of the proposals” offered to Tehran.." Cabinet Decries Israeli Airstrike on Beachgoers [Jun 13]
"The Council of Ministers yesterday condemned Israel’s killing of eight Palestinians picnicking on a Gaza beach in a naval attack on Friday. 'The Cabinet expressed its condemnation of the Israeli air raids on a Gaza beach resulting in the death and wounding of a number of innocent civilians,' the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) quoted Culture and Information Minister Iyad Madani as saying.." Saudi Prisoners Suicide Impossible [Jun 13]
"Relatives of two Saudi detainees who died at Guantanamo Bay said the men could not have committed suicide as the US military reported, because they were strict Muslims, newspapers reported on Monday. Islam prohibits suicide and sets out harsh punishments in the after-life for those who take their own lives. The men's families said they had probably been killed.." [more]

Saudi Suspicion Over Guantanamo Deaths [Jun 12]
"A lawyer for Saudi nationals imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay said yesterday that he held US authorities responsible for the deaths of Saudi prisoners. He implied the inmates were tortured to death. The UK’s constitutional affairs minister joined calls for the jail camp to be shut down. "Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah is set to launch around 20 industrial and infrastructure projects worth more than SR81 billion at Jubail Industrial City today.. ..The king is also set to open the first phase of the second industrial city, Jubail-II. According to an official statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency, the Jubail-II project, which covers an area of 1,950 hectares, will cost SR2.54 billion. Jubail-II is expected to attract investment projects worth SR220 billion.." [more]

Dead Saudi Detainees Named [Jun 11]
"Saudi Arabia on Sunday identified two Saudi nationals found dead in their cells at the US prison in Guantanamo Bay, while a rights group blamed US officials for their deaths.. ..Saudi Arabia said it has begun procedures to receive the bodies of Mani bin Shaman bin Turki al Habradi and Yasser Talal Abdullah Yahya Al Zahrani.
