Saudi
king still in hospital despite reports of improving health
[May 30 2005 03:00 GMT]
King Fahd, the Saudi monarch, yesterday spent a third day in hospital being
treated for respiratory problems amid rising concern about his frail health.
A medical official was quoted in Riyadh as saying that chest X-rays, taken
at the weekend, showed that the king was recovering from the pneumonia for
which he was hospitalized. He described the king, who was in intensive care,
as "stable and improving".

Saudi king’s health ‘steadily improving’, minister says
The health
of Saudi Arabian King Fahd, who was admitted to a Riyadh hospital three days
ago, is steadily improving, a top official in the kingdom said in comments
published on Monday. “Thank
God, his health is steadily improving,” the English-language Arab News
quoted Saudi Interior Minister Prince Nayef, as saying late Sunday.

Officials said he
was suffering from high fever, pneumonia and respiratory complications from
water in his lungs. They said his condition was stable on Sunday and that he
was still being treated for respiratory difficulties. "The
necessary medical tests were carried out and they all showed that his health
condition is stable and reassuring, thank God. More examinations will be
conducted at a later stage.."
Saudi
economy should weather king's illness
The latest illness of King Fahd will not affect Saudi Arabia's oil
policy, which has been marked by stability under the command of Crown Prince
and de facto ruler Abdullah bin Abdel-Aziz, according to Gulf experts.
"The kingdom's policy is stable and I don't think King Fahd's state of
health will have an impact on the market" despite an initial rise in
crude prices Friday following news that he was hospitalized, said former
Kuwaiti Oil Minister Ali al-Baghli.

figurehead, with Crown Prince Abdullah performing most of the head-of-state
functions.
