Flynt Leverett is Senior Fellow and Director of the Geopolitics of Energy Initiative in the New America Foundation�s American Strategy Program. He is also a visiting professor of political science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
From 1992 to 2003, Dr. Leverett had a distinguished career in government, serving as senior director for Middle East affairs at the National Security Council, Middle East expert on the Secretary of State�s Policy Planning Staff, and senior analyst at the Central Intelligence Agency. Since leaving government, he has written important articles and Op Eds on global energy affairs for leading newspapers and journals, including The Financial Times, The New York Times, The Washington Quarterly, and The National Interest. Fire, a much acclaimed 2005 book on politics and policymaking in Syria that also offers recommendations for U.S. policy toward this critical country. He has published numerous Op Eds and articles on Middle Eastern and other international issues in outstanding newspapers and journals and appeared on a wide range of news and public affairs programs, as well as The Daily Show With Jon Stewart. Dr. Leverett speaks regularly on Middle Eastern and global energy issues in prominent fora in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, and before distinguished business audiences. He holds a Ph.D. in politics from Princeton University and is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
