"..Saudi Arabia promised today to continue working with its Gulf neighbors to support Iraq’s new government and promote stability in the region. Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faysal made the pledge here during a joint news conference with Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. The news conference followed the secretaries’ meeting last night with Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah and other top Saudi officials to explore ways to build closer ties between the two countries and encourage greater support for Iraq. That session and today’s meeting between Rice and the foreign minister covered the watershed, the leaders told reporters.."   [more]

"..As Secretary Rice and Secretary Gates head for the Middle East this week, we wanted to send a strong signal of support for the security concerns of all of our partners in the region, of Israel, of Egypt, of Saudi Arabia, and of the other Gulf states, the members of the Gulf Cooperation Council. And we see this announcement this morning about our future security assistance over the long term to support our broad strategic interest in the Middle East, and that is to maintain a very strong American presence and influence in the region. It is to give specific support to those partners that need it and that's all of them, of course. And it's also a comprehensive step by the United States to address our overall policy objectives in the region.."  [more]

Click for complete item (HTML)Rice, Gates Travel to the Middle East - Press Briefing

"..The President asked us to come out to the region for several reasons: first of all, to affirm the importance of this region to the United States and to reaffirm American - the American commitment to the security of our allies in what is a complicated time. It's a reaffirmation of an American commitment that is decades old. Secondly, we will have an opportunity to engage intensively on the numerous political and military issues in the region, political issues like Lebanon, the Israeli-Palestinian issue, of course Iraq and other issues of interest. We will have, thirdly, a chance to talk about what initiatives we might undertake with our friends and allies in the security and political areas. In that regard, I would just note that we are very concerned to be able to provide for the security of our longstanding allies in the region and Nick Burns will be coming out to the region in mid August to talk about some of the aspects of security assistance and cooperation. So Gates and I will talk about initiatives that our friends and allies want to take, and then Nick Burns will be following up in August.."  [more]

"..In some respects we almost have two Middle Easts forming. When you look at the region today, you see, this sort of arch of crisis/instability - potential instability - from Egypt through Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Iran - Northern tier of countries in the region. And then, when you're in the GCC countries in particular, it's almost if you're in a different Middle East.."  [more]

To support our continued diplomatic engagement in the region, we are forging new assistance agreements with the Gulf States, Israel, and Egypt. This effort will help bolster forces of moderation and support a broader strategy to counter the negative influences of al-Qaeda, Hizballah, Syria, and Iran. During our visits to Egypt and Saudi Arabia, Secretary Gates and I will meet with our counterparts to discuss ways to advance security and stability in Iraq. I will also meet the Foreign Ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, Egypt, and Jordan to discuss regional issues in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. Later, I will travel to Jerusalem and Ramallah to continue discussions on the development of a political horizon with Israeli and Palestinian officials. Through our Gulf Security Dialogue, we are helping to strengthen the defensive capabilities of our partners, and we plan to initiate discussions with Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf States on a proposed package of military technologies that will help support their ability to secure peace and stability in the Gulf region.."  [more]

WASHINGTON: The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Zalmay Khalilzad, on Sunday accused U.S. ally Saudi Arabia of undermining efforts to stabilize Iraq. The comments during a CNN interview follow reports that the United States is set to announce the proposed sale of $20 billion in sophisticated weaponry for Saudi Arabia and other wealthy Gulf states. UNITED NATIONS -- The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations on Monday stressed the importance of Saudi Arabia's help in bringing peace to the Middle East, a day after he accused the kingdom of undermining U.S. efforts to stabilize Iraq. Zalmay Khalilzad attempted to play down the critical remark he made Sunday on CNN's "Late Edition," telling reporters at U.N. headquarters in New York that Saudi Arabia is "a great ally" and friend of the United States. Still, he urged Saudi leaders to do more to help end Iraq's sectarian violence.   [more]

The comments by Saud al-Faisal, at a news conference while flanked by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, came during their high-profile visit aimed at pushing Saudi and other Sunni Arab allies to do more to help the beleaguered Shiite-dominated Iraqi government.  [more]

JERUSALEM, Aug. 1 -- Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister said Wednesday that his country would consider attending President Bush’s planned Israeli-Palestinian peace conference in the fall, which would put Saudi officials publicly at the same table as their Israeli counterparts for the first time since 1991. But Saudi officials said a precondition of its attendance was that the conference tackle the four big “final status” issues that had bedeviled peace negotiators since 1979: the fate of Palestinian refugees who fled or were forced to flee their homes in Israel, mostly before or during the 1948 war; the status of Jerusalem; the borders of a Palestinian state; and the dismantlement of Israeli settlements in the West Bank.  [more]

"With America determined to thwart Iran's possibly nuclear-tipped ambitions, and the Islamic Republic set on blocking the superpower's regional sway, some are calling the contest between Iran and the United States a new cold war. "Saudi Arabia has withdrawn its proposal to ban Garuda Indonesia from its airspace on safety considerations. Last month, Indonesia’s Transport Ministry received a letter from Saudi Arabia’s General Authority on Civil Aviation warning of a possible ban since the body normally followed EU aviation policy. Experts Call for GCC Stock Market [Aug 4]
"Financial analysts have called for a joint stock market for Gulf Cooperation Council member states according to a report by Kuwaiti news agency KUNA. The move would consolidate efforts for an integrated economy between the six Gulf countries and accommodate the huge liquidity traded on a daily basis, the report says. Analysts told the agency GCC investors were becoming more aware of investment principles, and said officials should think seriously about absorbing liquidity and re-investing in the region instead of allowing it to migrate to foreign markets where risks were higher.." Opec July Output Rose 445,000 Barrels [Aug 4]
"Crude-oil production in July by members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries rose 445,000 barrels a day, led by gains in Iraq and Nigeria, a Bloomberg News survey showed. Output averaged 30.48mn barrels a day, according to the survey of oil companies, producers and analysts. It was the biggest gain since January, when Angola joined the producer group. Excluding Angola, it was the largest monthly rise since September 2004. 'More oil is more oil so this will increase supply and is bearish for the market,' said Tim Evans, an energy analyst at Citigroup in New York. 'The most dramatic increases were from Iraq and Nigeria, so they could be fleeting.'.. ..Opec ministers are scheduled to hold their next conference on September 11 in Vienna.." [more]

"General Electric won EU approval Friday to sell its Pittsfield-based plastics division to petrochemicals manufacturer Saudi Basic Industries for about $11.6 billion. The European Commission found no antitrust problems with the transaction, saying the companies’ product ranges were complementary - with Saudi Basic Industries Corp. focusing on raw materials and GE Plastics specializing in refined engineering plastics. Regulators also looked at how the deal might affect the supply chain but said neither was big enough as a supplier or a customer to shut off access to supply or demand to rivals.. ..The deal is expected to create a net gain, after taxes, of $1.5 billion.." Saudi Support for U.S Middle East Peace Plans Raises Cautious Optimism [Aug 2]
"Saudi Arabia may soften its longstanding hostility towards Israel by participating in a U.S.-sponsored Middle East peace conference that the Jewish state will also attend this fall.. ..However, the Saudi enthusiasm for such a summit came with an important caveat. The sheikdom was only interested in such a meeting if it 'deals with the heart of the peace process, the issues of peace, core issues, not one that is just a podium for meetings and talks that do not enrich peace'.. ..If Saudi Arabia attends the peace summit, which may take place in New York sometime between September and November, it would mark the first time that the keepers of Islam's holiest sites will have sat down across a table from Israeli officials.."
