Saudi Arabia to Hold National Fundraiser for Tsumani Victims
"The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz have issued directives for a national fundraising event on Saudi television to be held on January 6 for the victims of the tsunami in the Indian Ocean region.."

Tsunami Recovery Aid
The government of Saudi Arabia has decided to raise its relief assistance to $30 millions in view of the recent assessments of the magnitude of the tragedy caused by the Tsunami, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said in a report Tuesday [Jan 4]. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's assistance will be coordinated with the United Nations' agencies handling this disaster relief, in order to ensure a speedy and effective delivery of humanitarian aid to victims of this disaster.."

Saudi Arabia offers another US$20 mln in aid to Tsunami-hit countries
"..Considering the unexpected severe damages caused by the quake and Tsunami in southeast and south Asia, Saudi King Fahd Ibn Abdul-Aziz has ordered the donation of another 20 million dollars in aidto disaster-striken regions, the official Saudi Press Agency reported.."

Al-Qaeda: Riyadh attacks targeted interior minister
"The Saudi wing of Al-Qaeda said it had tried to assassinate the kingdom's Interior Minister in two high-profile suicide bombings in Riyadh last week, according to an Internet statement posted on Tuesday. The statement, signed by the Al-Qaeda Organization in the Arabian Peninsula and dated Dec. 31, also vowed the group would wage more attacks against "infidels and Christians" in the world's top oil exporter.."

Saudi Women Will Be Allowed to Vote in '09
"Former Saudi female candidates for the upcoming municipal elections had varied responses after a senior election official yesterday said that women would be allowed to vote in 2009. Prince Mansour ibn Miteb, chairman of the General Committee for Municipal Elections, explained that the only reason women were not allowed to vote in this round was because municipal elections are a new experience and the short time given to prepare for them made it impossible to allow women's participation this time.."

Mubarak holds talks in Saudi to smooth ties with Libya
"Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak arrived in Saudi Arabia Tuesday on a visit which Egyptian officials said was aimed at smoothing out strained ties between Riyadh and Libya..  ..Mubarak would hold talks with Crown Prince Abdullah in a bid to defuse tensions between Riyadh and Libya over an alleged Libyan plot to assassinate Abdullah. ."

Oil Surges as Saudi Output Drop Coincides With Rising Fuel Use
"The country has lowered production by 500,000 barrels a day, Reuters cited Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi as saying. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries pledged last month to cut output by one million barrels a day starting Jan. 1. U.S. petroleum products demand over the last four weeks was 1.9 percent higher than a year ago, the government said.."
