Saudi Arabia's unique role in the Arab and Islamic worlds, its possession of the world's largest reserves of oil, and its strategic location make its friendship important to the United States. Diplomatic relations were established in 1933; the U.S. embassy opened in Jeddah in 1944 and moved to Riyadh in 1984. The Jeddah embassy became a U.S. consulate. Meanwhile, a U.S. consulate opened in Dhahran in 1944.  The United States and Saudi Arabia share a common concern about regional security, oil exports and imports, and sustainable development. Close consultations between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia have developed on international, economic, and development issues such as the Middle East peace process and shared interests in the Gulf. The continued availability of reliable sources of oil, particularly from Saudi Arabia, remains important to the prosperity of the United States as well as to Europe and Japan. Saudi Arabia is one of the leading sources of imported oil for the United States, providing more than one million barrels/day of oil to the U.S. The U.S. is Saudi Arabia's largest trading partner, and Saudi Arabia is the largest U.S. export market in the Middle East.." "..The development of a Saudi nuclear weapon represents one of the most serious and most likely consequences of an Iranian acquisition of nuclear weapons. If Iran obtains a nuclear weapon, it will place tremendous pressure on Saudi Arabia to follow suit. The only factor that would likely dissuade the Saudis from pursuing a nuclear weapon would be a restored United States-Saudi bilateral relationship and a repaired Saudi perception regarding the reliability of the U.S. security guarantee. If the United States does not take deliberate actions in the coming years to achieve both of these objectives, an Iranian bomb will almost certainly lead to a Saudi bomb.."  [more]

US to Push Mideast Peace, Iraq Ties [Mar 15]
" US Vice President Dick Cheney leaves for the Middle East on Sunday, hoping to help revive the battered peace process and get Arab allies like Saudi Arabia to do more to curb Iran's influence in Iraq. Bush's term, Cheney is expected to seek support for confronting Tehran over its nuclear program and push Israel and the Palestinians to fulfill past promises for peace.. ..The political unrest in Lebanon, the situation in Syria, the violence in Gaza, and sky-high oil prices will all come up as Cheney visits Oman, Saudi Arabia, Israel, the West Bank, and Turkey, top aide John Hannah said Friday.. ..Cheney was not expected to press Saudi King Abdullah too much to boost oil output, or push OPEC to do so, in the face of sky-high oil prices that have fueled a bitter debate ahead of the November 4 US elections.." The drop was led by Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal's Kingdom Holding Company, which plummeted 8.16% to 11.25 Saudi riyals on the back of news that US investment bank Bear Stearns was forced to seek emergency financing to stay afloat.. ..'The outlook for the global economy is worrying investors because a recession would impact oil prices,' said Ibrahim Al-Alwan, deputy chief executive of KSB Capital. 'This would affect companies that have direct dealings with global markets, such as Sabic and banks.'.." [more]

Why OPEC Won't Boost Oil Supplies [Mar 14]
"..as pricey as oil is these days, there's no shortage of customers elsewhere in the world. (There are also plenty of investors pouring billions into oil futures as a hedge against the falling dollar — and so driving up oil prices even more.) The major reason for the current high prices is that OPEC's production has been seriously stretched by the huge increase in demands from booming China and India, as well as from oil-rich countries in the Middle East itself, says Lawrence Eagles, chief economist of the Paris-based International Energy Agency, the watchdog for oil-consuming countries like the United States and those in the European Union. "Most OPEC members are working close to flat-out," he says. "There is little spare capacity outside of the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, and some of that is relatively poor quality crude." And right now, global demand continues to rise. ." [more]

"The price of oil produced by Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has topped the $100-per-barrel mark for the first time, the organization said yesterday.. ..Brad Bourland, chief economist and head of research at the Riyadh-based Jadwa Investment, said: 'The rise in OPEC oil price will lead to increase in trade and budget surpluses for oil-producing countries.' Bourland, however, ruled out any change in spending plans of OPEC member countries. 'Spending of oil-producing countries will stay in line with budget projections for this year,' he added. Dr. John Sfakianakis, chief economist at SABB, said: 'At the time when the US economy is in a recession, record high oil price is not something auspicious. exclusively dependent on oil revenues, said a new report by Booz Allen Hamilton. The region’s economic development continues to gain momentum, despite being largely unrecognized. If this economic oasis can flower, it suggests the future of the Middle East is more hopeful - and more complex, than many realize.. ..This phenomenon is being spurred by a broad group of decision makers trying to build a bridge between Middle East culture and its economic potential.. ..If they manage to create this unique economy, the oasis blooming today won’t be a mirage, but an attractive, sustainable, fertile valley.." "Saudi Arabia said on Sunday anyone who received a voice recording from al Qaeda's deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahri on their mobile phone must inform the authorities within a week to avoid arrest. The Interior Ministry said last week that 56 men held since December on suspicion of seeking to revive al Qaeda cells in Saudi Arabia had planned to use a voice recording of Zawahri saved on a mobile phone to raise funds for the group.. ..Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest oil exporter and home to Islam's holiest sites, has been the target of attacks by militants linked to al Qaeda since 2003. But the campaign has gone quiet since its last major operation in February 2006 when militants tried to attack the world's largest oil processing plant at Abqaiq. 'The ministry calls on all those who were contacted concerning this voice message ... to inform the authorities,'.." [more]

The official Saudi Press Agency said on Sunday that ambassador Ahmed bin Ali al-Qahtani had taken up his post. Crown Prince Sultan is due in Doha on Monday. "British Airways has not ruled out re-introducing services to Saudi Arabia, but the move is unlikely to happen until the airline receives new aircraft deliveries. That was the verdict from BA's CEO for Asia Pacific, Robbie Baird, who revealed that KSA, Korea and "more points in China and India" were under review. 'But we have a number of years before new aircraft are coming (24 Boeing 787 aircraft and 12 A380 aircraft),'.. ..BA ceased its Saudi Arabia operations post-9/11 and in November slashed its commission payments to agents based in the Kingdom to 0%. Government expenditure on projects is a major factor for the classification. The report - issued by a specialized center for economic studies and research - noted that the acceleration of the Saudi economy’s growth is due to a number of factors, such as the major economic reforms carried out by the government in the last 5 years - the most prominent are the recent laws and regulations endorsed to encourage the movement of commerce and investment along with the development of Saudi training and educational institutes based on the need of the labor market. The report added that the large size of liquidity in the Kingdom is due to high oil prices.." [more]

Businesses Told to Benefit From WTO Accession [Mar 9]
"The Saudi business sector should make efforts through their chambers of commerce and industry to draw benefits from the Kingdom’s World Trade Organization membership. This was the message given by Valentine Rugwabiza, assistant director general at Geneva-based WTO.. ..'The Kingdom is one of the newest members of the WTO. No doubt, your accession means true universality of the organization,' Rugwabiza said, adding that the importance of the Kingdom’s accession is highlighted by the fact that it is the world’s major exporter and importer. The WTO has 152 member-countries. 'After 12 long years of negotiations, the Kingdom has become a WTO member, but not much head way has been made by the business sector in overcoming the challenges of accession processes. This is partly because the business sector has not realized the benefits it could accrue from the country’s
accession to the world trade body,'.." [more]

"A leading Saudi reformist and his brother started to serve time behind bars on Saturday after being convicted of inciting women's protests in the ultra-conservative Muslim kingdom. Abdullah al-Hamed, a prominent Islamist reformist, and his brother Issa were sentenced last November to six months and four months in jail respectively. The sentences were upheld by an appeals court last month, but the two men were still free pending a decision on the rulings by the governor's office of al-Qassim region where their trial took place.. ..The charges against the Hamed brothers were linked to two sit-ins last summer by women in al-Qassim.. ..More than 40 Saudi human rights activists and reformists called earlier this month for the annulment of the 'unfair ruling' against the Hamed brothers. In November, New York-based Human Rights Watch slammed Saudi Arabia for jailing the two reformers, saying the judgement proved it was illegal to criticize the authorities in the kingdom.." [more]
