The year 2005 was a remarkable year in the
course of the historic Saudi-US relationship. An era ended
with the passing of King Fahd and the ascension of King Abdullah
to the throne in August, but there were numerous other important
developments chronicled by SUSRIS in 2005. Among them were:
a milestone summit between President Bush and King Abdullah in
April, the continuing commitment of Saudi Arabians and Americans
to the global war on terrorism, expansion of political reforms
including the introduction of nationwide elections, a Saudi trade
mission crossing the US in search of business partners for $600
billion in new projects, opening of a new "Strategic
Dialogue," reemphasis on student exchanges and
people-to-people contacts, a new "boom" in the Saudi
Arabian economy, accession of the Kingdom to the World Trade Organization,
and more.
The
year was also significant for the Saudi-US Relations Information
Service. SUSRIS continued to provide news and information
every day to a growing audience of decision makers, business
people, scholars, government and military officials, and average
citizens on the scope and depth of the relationship between the
United States and Saudi Arabia. There are over 10,000
subscribers to the SUSRIS email list who rely on the newsletter
service to keep them up to date with scores of articles delivered
to their desktops in 2005. Over one million web site hits
per month demonstrated the interest in Saudi-US relations among
Internet visitors. At mid-year the introduction of
"SUSRIS 2.0" provided an updated look, feel and
navigation to the web site and
newsletters.
Today,
we are pleased to offer a compilation of SUSRIS' 2005
production. The articles, interviews, news in depth items,
special reports and more covered a broad spectrum of interests
while documenting the scope of developments in the relationship
between America and the Kingdom. We hope this listing will
be useful to you as a review of the year past and as an index for
future reference.
We
thank you for your interest and support in SUSRIS. Happy New
Year.
