"As
I arrived at the Jiddah Economic Forum a
week ago, busily chatting with several
American businessmen , I mistakenly
approached the door labeled "Men
Entrance." "Women,
women," said the guard in a panic,
as though I were making a bold political
statement. I hadn't dealt with separate
entrances in many years, and the last
time, ironically, wasn't during my
decades of travel to the Middle East but
in Washington, where some well-known
social clubs continued the practice
until the late '80s.."

Saudi
Women and the Jeddah Economic Forum
By
Maggie Mitchell Salem and Reem Al Jarbou
"There
are moments in our lives that are so
vivid, so electrifying that we feel
swept up in a dynamic that is unrivaled
in its capacity to transform the future.
Both of us, a Saudi and an American,
recognized that we were indeed part of
such a moment last Saturday (Jan. 17) in
Jeddah
, Saudi Arabia
. The events of that day, largely
unknown outside the Gulf region, are
likely to shape dialogue within the
country on women's issues and reforms
for the next few years.."

How
the Saudis Can Defend Against American
Critics
By
Jamal A. Khashoggi
"Saudi-American
relations appear publicly to be doing
well. There are regular contacts between
officials from both countries and active
cooperation in security matters and in
the war against terrorism. The latest
example was the decision by the two
countries to add a Bosnian company to
the United Nations list of terrorist
organizations.

59th
Anniversary of Historic Meeting between
Ibn Saud and FDR
"To
the rest of the world, Saudi Arabia was
still largely unknown and the Middle
East a sideshow in the great war against
the Axis powers, but the Americans were
soon to see how the country's profile
had been elevated in the official
Washington. On February 14, 1945,
Abdul Aziz met President Roosevelt
aboard the USS Quincy in Egypt's
Great Bitter Lake.."
