Gunmen have killed at least six people in an attack on a Western oil company office in the Saudi city of Yanbu on May 1, 2004. [BBC]

Developments

  • Four gunmen struck at about 7:00 am (0400 GMT) Saturday, May 1, 2004.. (Source: BBC)
  • The gunmen fired from a car at a McDonald's restaurant and a hotel, before targeting the subsidiary of Swiss-Swedish firm ABB.   (Source: BBC)
  • Two Americans, two Britons, an Australian and a Saudi died in the attack. (Source: CNN Report)
  • A hostage was dragged naked behind the getaway car. (Source: US Embassy/NY Times)
  • Local hospitals report that up to 18 people, mostly Saudis, were injured. (Source: BBC)
  • Three attackers killed, the fourth was wounded.  (Saudi Interior Ministry/BBC)  
  • The five foreign victims were employees of Lummus, an ABB unit whose Middle Eastern offices are located in the Saudi town of Al-Khobar. (Source: Bloomberg)
  • The Swiss-based ABB company is under contract to work for the Saudi Yanbu Petrochemical company (YANPET), situated nearby. The executive said operations at the nearby YANPET facility, co-owned by the Saudi Basic Industries Corp (SABIC) and U.S. Exxon Mobil were continuing as normal. (Source: Arab Times)
