Issues in Context:
Prince Bandar Meets the Press

"On April 25, 2004 His Royal Highness Prince Bandar bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz appeared on 'Meet the Press' hosted by Tim Russert.  Prince Bandar followed Bob Woodward, author of 'Plan of Attack,' which chronicled the Bush Administration's preparations for the invasion of Iraq.  Russert began with questions about the book's revelation that Prince Bandar was briefed on the plan for war and allegations about crude oil prices.  The interview moved on to cover a wide range of issues and developments in the U.S.-Saudi relationship."

Honey & Onions:  A Memoir of Saudi Arabia in the Sixties
By Frances Meade

Excerpt from Chapter Nine

"Coming back to Riyadh was not as I imagined it.  I saw myself as the prodigal daughter being welcomed back as though nothing had happened in the three years since our departure.  But, there had been many alterations in the fabric of Riyadh life since then.  Most of our old friends were gone, a testament to the transient nature of the community that I had not recognized before.  Everything had seemed comfortably permanent during the time we had lived here, and it was something of a surprise to discover that I was a stranger once again.."

"Saudi Oil Is Secure and Plentiful, Say Officials"
By Tim Kennedy, Arab News

"WASHINGTON, 29 April 2004 -- Officials from Saudi Arabia's oil industry and the international petroleum organizations shocked a gathering of foreign policy experts in Washington yesterday with an announcement that the Kingdom's previous estimate of 261 billion barrels of recoverable petroleum has now more than tripled, to 1.2 trillion barrels.."

"Saudi knew of Bush war plans just hours before Powell"
by Robert Novak, Sun-Times Columnist
April 29, 2004

"Did President Bush really brief Prince Bandar on his Iraq war plans before he informed Colin Powell? Did the Saudi ambassador really cut a deal with the Bush administration to increase oil production in time for the presidential election? The answer to both questions is no, but those allegations entered the election year bloodstream thanks to distortion of Bob Woodward's Plan of Attack.."

From The History of the Saudi-US Relationship

U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. (Photo by U.S. Department of Defense)Secretary Rumsfeld Interview with Wolf Blitzer, CNN

October 28, 2001

The following is an excerpt taken from the interview.

Wolf Blitzer, CNN: I know our time is running out, but a quick question on Saudi Arabia. The criticism is they're not sharing information, they're not freezing assets that the United States has frozen of groups associated with al-Qaeda, they're not allowing the U.S. to launch strikes from Saudi soil. The criticism of Saudi Arabia is that they're a fair weather friend.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld: I don't know where this is coming from. I met with the Saudis when I was over there very recently. My impression is that they've been very cooperative, they've provided enormous assistance in a variety of different ways. They have over the years; it's been a good relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia. Of late I've read a series of article to that effect. But, my attitude is that they've been very helpful, they are being helpful today, they have a complicated problem. Most of the countries in the region do. They have to measure what they say. Some countries are more helpful publicly, and others are more helpful privately. My attitude about it is, we want help from all of them, and we want them to do it in a way that's comfortable for them. To the extent we start saying, everyone has to help on this, or everyone has to help publicly but not privately, we hurt ourselves, we hurt our goal, our target of trying to end these terrorist networks. So I'm very respectful of the situation that Saudi Arabia has, and I, and I know others in our government are very appreciative for all that they're doing to help.
