A Voice of
Peace; A Move Towards Stability
|
|
"..It
concerns me that so many of Saudi Arabia’s neighbors are
struggling to find peace and stability. Terrorism continues
to plague us all. Al Qaeda and its offshoots take advantage
of the political turmoil to advance their agenda and ethos.
We have worked with your government and other allies to
bring them to heel. By taking a global approach, that
includes police action, financial tracking and religious
challenges to them, we can definitely defeat the terrorists. In
Lebanon, the threat of greater instability increased with
the assassination of cabinet minister Pierre Gemayel. In
Palestine, the Israeli occupation continues to humiliate the
Palestinians and deny them their inalienable rights to an
identity and a country. Iran’s nuclear program continues
to create concern for the world. And we all know of the
daily turmoil and suffering of the Iraqi people. When
looking at these situations -- many of them lasting years,
even decades – we can only ask ourselves: where can we
find hope?.."

Saudi
Arabia Will Protect Sunnis if the U.S. Leaves
|
|
"..In
February 2003, a month before the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq,
the Saudi foreign minister, Prince Saud al-Faisal, warned
President Bush that he would be "solving one problem
and creating five more" if he removed Saddam Hussein by
force. Had Bush heeded his advice, Iraq would not now be on
the brink of full-blown civil war and disintegration.
One hopes he won't make the same mistake again by ignoring
the counsel of Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the United
States, Prince Turki al-Faisal, who said in a speech last
month that "since America came into Iraq uninvited, it
should not leave Iraq uninvited." If it does, one of
the first consequences will be massive Saudi intervention to
stop Iranian-backed Shiite militias from butchering Iraqi
Sunnis.." [Nawaf Obaid - Washington Post op-ed, Nov.

Saudis work to curb Iran's influence
By Donna Abu-Nasr
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — Worried by Iran's deepening involvement in the Arab world, Saudi Arabia has been working quietly to curtail the Shiite nation's influence and prevent the marginalization of Sunni Muslims in the region's hotspots. Analysts say the tug-of-war between the two Mideast powers signals a new chapter in an uneasy relationship, one that has swung over the years between wariness and -- at times -- outright
confrontation.. [more]

The Arabian Peninsula: Oil, Security, and Change
Live webcasts will be available through www.meridian.org at 6:30 pm Eastern Standard Time the night of the program.
Tues., Nov. 7—Dec. 5, 6:30 p.m. [Available
via archived web casts]
No cluster of countries is more critical to U.S. interests than those situated along the Gulf in the Arabian Peninsula: Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Oman. Together with neighboring Iraq and Iran, they control some two-thirds of the world’s known oil and gas reserves. Despite their riches, they face threats to their security and pressures for political and social reforms. Given its critical importance to the world’s economy, this compact, prosperous, but highly volatile region remains high on many nations’ policy agendas. This series provides greater understanding of the region’s developments, placing them in historical context and analyzing their future ramifications. Journalists, scholars, military leaders, and energy experts share their candid views and lead probing discussions in the stately drawing rooms of historic Meridian House. Moderated by former Middle East ambassadors Walter Cutler and Kenton Keith..
