Cooperation on the Rise
An Interview with Ambassador
Richard W. Murphy

"Richard W. Murphy, a former U.S. ambassador to Riyadh, says that U.S.-Saudi counterterrorism cooperation is increasing. 'From a slow and fitful start in October 2001,' he says, mutual efforts to track terrorists 'really took off' after the May 12, 2003, assaults on Riyadh housing compounds that killed 35. Saudi public sympathy for Muslim extremism is eroding, he says.."

Ali al-Naimi
Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
with remarks and introduction by Brent Scowcroft

"It would be incorrect to say that the history of U.S.-Saudi relations is only about oil. The relationship between our two countries is more complex and extensive than that and examples of cooperation in areas of mutual benefit are numerous. Nevertheless, there is no denying that the key pillar of our relationship is a shared commitment to ensuring the availability and security of adequate supplies of petroleum to meet world needs at fair prices that are conductive to overall economic growth.." -- Ali al-Naimi, Saudi Arabian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources

Honey & Onions:  A Memoir of Saudi Arabia in the Sixties
By Frances Meade

Excerpt from Chapter Ten

"The sky is beginning to redden in the west, silhouetting the racetrack grandstand; to the east, a full moon is rising and Adnan's hoofs punch holes in the pre-sunset silence.  We are alone on the track, far removed from the city and the commotion of homeward traffic, two rather elderly companions enjoying the peaceful evening and an easy ride.  The sun is down now, and the call to prayer floats over the darkening trees.  We walk quietly back to the stable as we have done for as many years as I can remember.  Does he remember too?"

From The History of the Saudi-US Relationship

President Bush and Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal. (Photo by the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum)Statement by Press Secretary Fitzwater on the President Bush's Meeting With Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal of Saudi Arabia

October 9, 1990

The President met this afternoon in the Oval Office with His Royal Highness, Prince Saud al-Faisal, the Foreign Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The President asked the Prince to convey to His Majesty, King Fahd, assurances of the United States' continued commitment to ending Iraq's occupation of Kuwait and the restoration of the legitimate government of Kuwait. The Prince said that Saudi Arabia is pleased by the support it has received from the United States and the international community in opposing Iraqi aggression. The President and Prince Saud both agreed on the importance of economic sanctions as a means of achieving a peaceful solution to the crisis. They also shared their concern over Iraq's brutal behavior against Kuwait and the Kuwaiti people. They also discussed other matters, including the recent violence in Jerusalem, deploring it and calling upon all parties to exercise restraint.
